WHAT IS THE NATIONAL NOTARY ASSOCIATION?
The NATIONAL
NOTARY ASSOCIATION has been the nation's professional Notary organization since 1957. Our
member-supported Association is committed to the development of Notaries
throughout the United States by providing education, support and advocacy...dedicated
to furthering the role of the Notary, including educating law makers,
businesses and state officials on the Notary's ever-expanding role in
fraud prevention and Homeland Security issues. The NNA works with Notaries
nationwide to instill in them, as public officials, the highest ethical
standards of conduct and notarial practice. |
THE 10 GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF THE NNA
I. |
The Notary shall, as a government officer and
public servant, serve all of the public in an honest, fair and
unbiased manner. |
II. |
The Notary shall act as an impartial witness and
not profit or gain from any document or transaction requiring a
notarial act, apart from the fee allowed by statute. |
III. |
The Notary shall require the presence of each
signer and oath-taker in order to carefully screen each for identity
and willingness, and to observe that each appears aware of the
significance of the transaction requiring a notarial act. |
IV. |
The Notary shall not execute a false or incomplete
certificate, nor be involved with any document or transaction that
the Notary believes is false, deceptive or fraudulent. |
V. |
The Notary shall give precedence to the rules of
law over the dictates or expectations of any person or entity. |
VI. |
The Notary shall act as a ministerial officer and
not provide unauthorized advice or services. |
VII. |
The Notary shall affix a seal on every notarized
document and not allow this universally recognized symbol of office
to be used by another or in an endorsement or promotion. |
VIII. |
The Notary shall record every notarial act in a
bound journal or other secure recording device and safeguard it as
an important public record. |
IX. |
The Notary shall respect the privacy of each signer
and not divulge or use personal or proprietary information disclosed
during execution of a notarial act for other than an official
purpose. |
X. |
The Notary shall seek instruction on notarization,
and keep current on the laws, practices and requirements of the
notarial office. |

WHAT IS THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF NOTARIES?
Established in 1965, the AMERICAN
SOCIETY OF NOTARIES is foremost in education, support and supply for the notary in America...The
American Society of Notaries is dedicated to providing its members with
education, professional service and technical support; promoting high
ethical standards; and increasing public awareness of notaries' valuable
contributions. |
THE CODE OF ETHICS OF THE ASN
We, the members of the
American Society of Notaries, having accepted the responsibility of the
office of notary public, in order to faithfully discharge our duties with
both competence and integrity, resolve to adhere to the following
standards of conduct:
 | To uphold the trust placed in me by the
public I serve;
 | To maintain a professional manner
suitable to the office I hold;
 | To treat each individual fairly and
equally, with kindness and respect;
 | To always be satisfied that the
individual appearing before me understands the contents of the
document to be executed or oath to be administered, before proceeding;
 | To always satisfy myself as to the
identity of the individual appearing before me in my capacity as
notary public;
 | To not betray the confidence of any
individual appearing before me;
 | To never perform any notarial act in
which I am a party in interest or from which I stand to benefit;
 | To never divulge the contents of any
document nor the facts of execution of that document without proper
authority;
 | To keep informed of the law regarding
the duties and powers of the office of notary public in my
jurisdiction and not compromise that law; To not use the office of
notary public as a means of financial gain, for myself or others, in
any other business or profession;
 | To exercise extreme care to insure that
the notarial seal, stamp, and records are kept in a safe place and are
not used by any other person;
 | To always conduct myself and perform my
duties in a manner which will bring credit to myself, my office, and
the Society. |
| | | | | | | | | |
Adopted by the American
Society of Notaries Board of Directors, May 4, 1980.
